Stem Cell Transplants

Preparation of stem cells for transplant in cancer patients requires the isolation of stem cells from the peripheral blood of the patient or donor. In autologous transplants, cancer cells must also be purged from the specimen. Current technologies result in a low yield of cells, and often impure specimen, due to limitations of the separation methods. It is often necessary to perform the separation procedure a number of times in order to obtain a satisfactory transplant specimen.

The CEP Advantage

The CEP yields a larger number of viable cells, with increased purity in comparison to leading separation methods. BioCep’s yield, is six times greater than existing methods, with no structural or membrane changes in 98% of the harvested cells, compared to 60-80% undamaged cells harvested by the competition. BioCep's separated cells include less then 5% undesired cells, after a single pass of the tested cells through the system, compared to 20-40% undesired cells harvested by the competition. BioCep’s process is quicker and need only be done once in order to achieve the desired volume and purity level of transplant, lowering costs.

BioCep’s ability to prepare purer stem cell transplants and remove unwanted cells from the transplant will improve the transplantation of hematopoietic cells derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood or cord blood. Specifically, BioCep's technology will:
  • Accelerate the rate of engraftment
  • Reduce the incidence and severity of Graft Versus Host Disease
  • Decrease the number of cancerous cells that are returned to the patient

By lowering the chances of GVHD and raising the total success rate of treatment by stem cell transplant, the number of patients suitable for these transplants is expected to grow. Furthermore, BioCep's pure transplant will raise the success rate of autologous transplantations.

Market Opportunity

Over 700,000 people suffer from Leukemia and Lymphoma in the US. According to the National Marrow Donor Program, between 45,000 – 50,000 hematopietic cell transplants (blood or marrow) are performed annually worldwide to treat patients with malignant and non-malignant diseases. The stem cell separation market represents a $500 million annual opportunity for BioCep.
